Imagine receiving a video call from someone in a police uniform. The caller says your name is linked to a serious crime. He shows what looks like an official identity card. He warns that you are now under 'digital arrest'.
You are told not to disconnect. You are told not to tell anyone. You are told to transfer money quickly to clear your name. It sounds frightening. That fear is exactly what the scammers are counting on.
The Clear Truth
Here is the clear truth: there is no legal concept called 'digital arrest' in India.
Real police do not arrest anyone over a video call. They do not keep a person under surveillance through a phone camera as a form of arrest. They do not demand money to close or clear a case.
Officers from the police, the CBI, customs or any other agency will not ask you to move money to a 'safe' account. They will not ask you to pay a fine instantly by bank transfer. They will not ask you to share financial details to prove your innocence.
How Scammers Make the Lie Look Real
Scammers try to make the lie believable. They may use fake uniforms, office-like backgrounds, forged documents, official-sounding language, and threats of immediate arrest or frozen accounts.
They often insist on secrecy and constant contact. That is because isolation stops the victim from checking the story with family, a bank, or the real police.
Some victims have reportedly lost very large sums after being pressured in this way. That is why treating any such call as suspicious from the first minute is so important.
What to Do If You Get This Call
If you get a call like this, hang up. Do not transfer any money, however urgent the demand sounds.
Do not share an OTP, bank details, card numbers or remote-access codes. Do not install any app the caller asks for.
Take time to verify independently, using a number or office you trust. Do not call back a number the caller gave you. Talk to a family member or your bank.
Report the attempt promptly on the cybercrime helpline 1930, or at cybercrime.gov.in, if you are in India. Pausing, checking and reporting can stop the scam before any money is lost.
