It was not an ordinary fence. The great barrier against Yajuj and Majuj was built with care, in clear steps. Part 3 of this series looks closely at how it was made.
A Plea Between Two Mountains
In the Quranic account in Surah Al-Kahf, Dhul-Qarnayn travels until he reaches a place between two mountains. There he meets a people who barely understand his language.
They explain their problem. Yajuj and Majuj, known in English as Gog and Magog, are causing corruption in the land. They ask him to build a barrier between them and the invaders.
They offer payment in return. He refuses their money. He says what his Lord has given him is better. He asks only for their help with labour. Then he sets out his plan.
Step One: Blocks of Iron
First, large blocks of iron are brought in. Workers stack them in the gap between the two mountains. They keep stacking until the space is filled to the level of the two sides.
Step Two: Heat Like Fire
Next, the workers are told to blow. They use bellows to make the heat grow. They keep blowing until the iron becomes like fire from the intense heat.
Step Three: Molten Copper
Finally, molten copper is brought and poured over the hot iron. As it cools and hardens, the copper seals the gaps between the blocks. It binds the whole structure together into a single, smooth and solid barrier.
Why Two Metals?
This is why the barrier became such a powerful image. It was a carefully engineered structure. Two metals worked together. Iron gave strength. Copper worked as a sealant.
The result was clear. Gog and Magog could not climb over it, because its surface was smooth. They could not dig through it, because it was so strong and thick.
A Wall That Will Not Last Forever
The barrier holds them back for a long period. But the story also teaches that it will not last forever. When the appointed time arrives, it will be levelled. Then Yajuj and Majuj will emerge.
